What Ohio requires

The statutory agent requirement is set by statute: Ohio Rev. Code § 1706.09 for LLCs and Ohio Rev. Code § 1701.07 for corporations. Your agent must:

• Keep a physical street address in Ohio — not a PO box, not a mail-forwarding box.
• Be there during normal business hours to accept service of process in person.
• Be an Ohio resident or an entity authorized to do business in Ohio.
• Forward what it receives to you promptly. Ohio treats service on your agent as legal notice to you, whether or not the papers ever reach your desk.

The filing office for all of this is the Ohio Secretary of State. If your entity is ever left without an agent on record, the state can strip its good standing — the status banks, lenders, and buyers check — until the default is cured.
